Pine flour is vitamins food for farm animals, derived from artificially pine needles or thin spruce and pine branches. For production of pine flour needles and small branches (thickness up to 0.8 cm) are chaffed with crushers, and then dried and milled. Production of pine flour is performed mainly in time of forest harvesting in the winter (pine needles of spring and summer collection contain a large number of essential oils).
1 kg of dry substances of pine or spruce needles contains - 0.4 fodder units and about 37g of digestible protein, as well as in average 350-360 mg of carotene. Pine flour contains B vitamins, C vitamins, PP, E, K, calcium, phosphorous, ferrum, manganese and other minerals. According to the content of B vitamins, needles, especially pine needles, is superior then greens of cereals and highly competitive with alfalfa. Needles contain chlorophyll and xanthophylls, which play an important role in metabolism, as well as a large number of phytoncids, protecting animals against intestinal diseases. That’s why flour derived from needles, has a bactericidal action. Furthermore, pine flour contains sugar, glucose, fructose, pectin, tannins, cobalt, copper, manganese, zinc, and ferrum. Such a comprehensive mineral and vitamin nutritional of pine flour and presence in its compound of easily fermentable carbohydrates has positive effect on the physiological state of animals, increases its productivity and improves the reproduction functions.
It is added to the diets of farm animals and birds, especially in winter and spring. Young cattle weighing more than 300 kg fresh needles should be fed at the beginning of the fattening in the amount of 1 kg, in the middle - 1.5 kg and at the end of the fattening - 2 kg per day. To fill lack of carotene, provitamin A, in diet of cows it can be added with pine flour mixed with concentrates. With regular pine flour feeding, calves are born viable, sick less. Among cows there are less of repeat cows and gynecological diseases. Production experience proves us that after 10 days the cows, receiving pine flour in the amount of 4-5 kg daily, milk in average 2 kg more per day in contrast with cows without pine flour feeding. Within month of needles feeding content of vitamin A in 1 kg of milk increases from 300 IE to 800 IE, i.e., the same as when vitamin A is injected. The feed includes in an amount of 3-5%.
A similar effect is achieved also when needles are used in the diets of young cattle at its breeding and fattening. Introduction of fresh crushed needles in the diet of young cattle allows reducing the cost of feed on bodyweight gain of 5-10%. The introduction of fresh chaffed pine needles in the diet of fattening cattle completely provides it with carotene, increases the average daily body weight gain, reduces the cost of feed per unit of gain, and increases the economic efficiency of fattening.
There is a beneficial effect of feeding with chaffed pine needles and its infusion for body of fur animals. In recent years, there is the trend of more wide use of non-traditional animal feeds and fodder additives at farm animals feeding. This is due to lack of rough feeds in farms, poor quality of hay and diets deficiency of vitamins and carbohydrates.
In addition, the needles contain minerals: Fe = 150-180 mg, Mn = 320 mg, Co = 10 mg.
It is recommended the following daily servings of pine flour: cows - 3 kg, heifers - 2 kg, pigs - 0.3 kg, sheep - 0.5 kg, poultry (chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, quail, partridge, and ostriches) - 2 grams, mink - 1-2 g, fox - 5 g, nutria - 1.5-2 g, rabbits - 2-3 g.
From the complex of biologically active substances the green pigment chlorophyll is of interest. Exceptional value of coniferous vegetation, as raw materials for animal feed, is that it is rich in minerals, and it is a means of prevention and treatment of several diseases of farm animals and poultries.
Thanks to bactericidal properties needles found its applications as a preservative in silage. Addition of crushed needles in an amount of 5% of the silage mass helps to reduce the loss of nutrients in 1.5 - 2 times as compared with control samples.
